Chrysler Repair: wheel bearing noise, wheel bearing noise, postal mail

Question
I have what sounds like a rear wheel bearing noise on my 1999 Chrysler mini van.The noise comes and goes as you turn back and forth.  Is it a big deal to replace the wheel bearing?

Answer
Hi Dan,
If it is not a 4wd vehicle that is easier. On the 2wd the hub and bearing are a unit that has to be replaced as a whole. It is bolted (4 bolts, 95 ft-lbs) on to the rear axle mounting plate. You have to remove the brake drum/caliper first.  The main tricks are if it is corroded in place you need a press/puller device to remove it, and if you have abs you need to remove the wheel sensor for re-installation.
The best thing would be for me to xerox copy and postal mail you the procedures for those 'tricks' if they confront you. Let me know a postal mailing address and I'll copy from the '02 manual (the '98 manual shows no details at all). If you would be so kind as to send me back three 42-cent stamps, that would cover my copy and mailing. Let me know if it is 4wd and if you have abs.
