Chrysler Repair: check engine light - PCM problems? Code 0601, 4 digit numbers, chrysler sebring

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LXI.  It has about 70K miles on it.  It has been running great all this time. Today the check engine light came on and the mechanic said the PCM module is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.  He tried re-setting a couple of codes, but the light came back on. He said the computer/PCM module needs to be replaced and costs $600.  Any help and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Sam,
Did he give you the 4-digit fault code numbers that came from the computer readout? If not, politely inquire what they were. Or go to an Autzone parts store for a free code readout. Or try this: use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then see if the odometer changes from 70k miles to instead show you 4-digit numbers preceeded by a P. There are specific numbers that can only mean that you have to replace the pcm, but if those were not present then I would not replace the pcm but rather respond to those other numbers. Let me know what they are and we'll go from there. Tell me which engine you have and also if this is a convert or a sedan.

QUESTION: 2001 Sebring LXI, 4 door Sedan, 2.7L engine V6
I checked the codes using the method you suggested.

P1684
P0601

And then it flashed "done".  The above were the only two codes that came up.

Please advise!

thx

Answer
Hi Sam,
That specific code 0601 does indeed say there is a fault inside the PCM and the only solution offered is to replace the PCM. You might very well find a used one at a wrecking yard for much less than $600. You would want to have it come from the same year/engine/transmission/anti-theft feature as your car. By shopping around you should be able to find a source for a lower cost solution. A minor amount of programming will need to be done to familiarize the replacement pcm to the other components of the digital communication system within the car: trans computer, body computer.

The 1684 just says the battery was disconnected recently.
