Chrysler Repair: starter motor replaced, now clicks, motor shaft, starter motor

Question
Hi, just replaced starter.in 300 m. now when we startede it ,there is a constant clicking. what should we do?

Answer
Hi Linda,
Do you mean the starter motor won't engage but instead you hear a clicking sound? If so, and if all the wires are clean, shiny, well-attached to the motor and to the battery, then I would say that your battery is low on charge and you need to jump start it or put a charger on the battery for a few hours.
If you mean that there is a clicking sound after the motor works and the engine starts and runs it means that the gear on the starter motor that engages the flex plate on the engine has not retracted fully or that the starter motor is not mounted straight on the flange to which it attaches and so you need to loosen the mounting bolts and realign it and tighten the bolts again. You may have the moveable gear (bendix gear) on the motor shaft that needs to be lubricated; it is supposed to retract by spring action when you release the key from the start position. So check the movement of that gear if realigning doesn't fix the click.
Those are the possibilities.

PS:There is a 'spacer' that goes between the starter motor and the flange to which it mounts which you may not have noticed when you removed the old starter. If that spacer wasn't put back on with the new one that could also explain the noise because that would be just like not having the gear retracted fully as I described above. So verify that the spacer was reused and is in place, if not, find the old starter and recover the spacer for reuse.
