Chrysler Repair: 2001 T&C; Temp & Compass dont display, manual roland, overhead consoles

Question
QUESTION: The temperature & direction display on the overhead console stopped working on our 2001 Chrysler Town & Country 6 cyclinder minivan.

Is it a matter of changing a fuse?  If so, which fuse?  Or is it more complicated?  If so, can a novice fix it or does it require an expert.  If an expert, how much should it cost?

Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Doug,
I don't have a manual for the '01, but rather the '02 and the '98 to refer to. I believe you may have the single fuse/relay box under the hood and no fuses under the dash (as is the case for the '98, let me know if otherwise). If fuse #14 is 15 amp size (rather than an empty slot as in the '98) then that would be the one to suspect. Otherwise, if the fuse is good it will be a matter of checking the voltage supply to the unit for which you will need a voltmeter. Tell me what other functions your overhead unit has, as there are three different overhead consoles so the troubleshooting differs. But start with fuse 14, and let me know if you do have a fuse box under the dash and we'll go from the '98 manual.

QUESTION: Thanks for your response.

The fuses are under the hood, next to the battery.

Also, the fuses are not numbered so I don't know which is #14.  They are labeled with various abbreviations that are not explained in the owner's manual.

I appreciate any further assistance you can provide.

Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Doug,
That #14 fuse is the one that also powers the interior lights, so if those are working it is probably OK (it is at the front outboard corner of the box). It may be labelled "IOD" for future reference, but I don't think that is your problem.
I would begin by removing the overhead unit and checking that you are getting 12V on pin 5 of the 12-pin plug all the time, and 12V on pin 6 of the plug when the ignition is in the 'run' position. There is a screw on the front of the console, then pull the unit straight down to release clips at the rear. Check the for voltage, then let me know what you find. You can measure the voltages by attaching the - probe of your meter to pin 4.
Let me know also what features your unit has as there are different models with different troubleshoot procedures.
