Chrysler Repair: 2001 town & country:jerks when slowing, powertrain control module, independent garage

Question
Hi, this is Monica. This is to answer Roland's question. I have a 3.8 engine, the code that it's giving me is p0608 cause my computer from the town & country is not working right, today it gave me p1791, so I don't know what to do. I also put M-10 in the transmissiom fluid.

Answer:  The description of your problem is too vague to be specific. My suggestion would be to go to an Autozone parts store for a fault code readout of the powertrain module which may give a clue as to what is wrong; they will often do that for free. If you can't get that then an independent garage will do the readout for around $40. Ask for the 4-digit fault code number(s) and what they mean, what they recommend, and for how much. Then write me back and we'll compare what you learned with the shop manual. Tell me which engine you have so I can be specific.
About the only thought I would have now is you might have too low a level of fluid in your transmission, so check its dipstick to see how the level shows it to be.

Hi Monica,
I have checked several code lists for '01 and '02 vehicles and cannot find specific listing of the 0608 and 1791. If you can tell me exactly what the number and names of the two codes you were given (or did these show up on your odometer window?) then we can move ahead on this problem. I don't know what M-10 is. Is that something that Chrysler approves to put in the transmission? If not, I would not use it. How much did you add?
The 0604,0605,0613 codes all point to a problem with the powertrain control module (engine computer). It that is what 0608 is too then I would suggest inspecting the two plugs to the powertrain control and verify the voltage supply and ground wires, and if those appear OK then replace the powertrain control module. But I would like to know what the 0608 means before buying a new module.
The 1791 has something to do with the transmission, but I don't have that code in any list exactly identical to that.
Are you sure you copied the numbers down accurately? Can you get another readout for free? If the powertrain computer is bad as regards its interaction with the transmission computer, then I would start by replacing the powertrain computer and see if that helps or not. But I would prefer working with codes that I see are accurate than making a guess as to what they are.
The control module is too expensive to guess about, and the 1791 transcode similarly is too expensive to guess about, and finally putting in unapproved fluid (if that is the case) can damage your transmission which is also very very expensive to repair. So please try to get the codes, and invesitigate M-10 so as to avoid a really large repair bill.
