Chrysler Repair: Chrysler T&C speedometer/Odometer problem, chrysler dealer, volt ohmmeter

Question
QUESTION: Good morning..

I have a 2000 Chrysler T&C, 134K miles. Recently, the speedometer and odometer stopped working. Everything else in the instrument cluster works fine - Tachometer works, transmission shifts properly (ie. no limp mode). Some of the functions displayed by the overhead console (Distance to Empty, Mileage, that sort of thing) aren't displaying good values. The check engine light is on, but when we try to pull the codes we get an error and can't get the codes.

I have changed the output speed sensor but no luck

Any suggestions?

thanks
Nick

ANSWER: Hi Nick,
Was there any word or phrase associated with the "error" code? It may be that would be revelatory of something related to the digital data bus or its components. So let me know specifically and also mention which kind of OBD-II reader you used (or was this via the ignition key?). It is anomalous that the transmission is not acting up, which would be the case if the output speed sensor and/or its circuit were compromised. So it seem that somewhere from the transmission computer to the instrument cluster/overhead console the data is getting lost. It may be necessary to do a readout with a more sophisticated code reader to get a better hint of what to look for. Please let me know additional information as you learn of it.

QUESTION: Roland..

Thank you for your prompt response.

The only phrase associated with the error code is "ERROR". Nothing elses is displayed. The machine could not get a reading. I tried two locations, an AutoZone and my local mechanic. The local mechanic had an Actron Scantool.

thanks
Nick

Answer
Hi Nick,
I guess that the only thing to do is to check the wiring to the diagnostic plug itself. Do you have a volt-ohmmeter? If so, let me know and I'll give you the wire connections and you can start with that. Once those are confirmed then the only alternative would be to try a Chrysler dealer to see if they can get a code with a DRB-III reader.
