Chrysler Repair: 97 Chrysler Sebring:transmission limp-in, chrysler sebring, hi adam

Question
Roland, I have a 97 Sebring, and like one of your previous questions, it is stuck in 2nd gear. Now the wiring harness had previously caught on fire, and melted half of the wires. My friend and i spliced and re-wired everything back together, and literally everything in the car works fine, except it not shifting. I have had diagnostics run on the car, and it came up with 2 codes, the numbers of which i don't remember, but one was a "transmission system malfunction, the other was something with the shift solenoid. I have replaced the solenoid, but it did nothng. The transmission system malfunction could mean any number of things. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Adam,
The code numbers are the best diagnostic technique for the trans being in limp-in mode. That is a 'self-protective defense' measure that it adopts when allowing it to run normally will cause more damage. But there are so many possible causes it it totally conjecture as to what is specifically wrong. You can get a free code readout at most Autozone parts stores so if you will do that and give me the specific numbers we might get somewhere with this. Disconnect the battery just before goin to get it readout as that will erase the possibly stale codes and give you a fresh set of readings. The codes are 4-digit, and you will get a 1684 code for sure because that tell you the battery was disconnected recently.
Also, let me know which Sebring you have: convert/coupe/sedan? as they are different cars.
