Chrysler Repair: 2000 Chyrsler Neon Rear Window Defroster, chrysler neon lx, 30 amp fuse

Question
QUESTION: Hi Roland,
I have a 2000 Chrysler Neon LX and the rear window defroster has stopped working. The interior switch illuminates when lights are on, but amber light does not illuminate when I try to operate. Help please

ANSWER: Hi David,
I am limited to a '96 manual for the Neon, but if we assume the power circuitry is the same then I would suggest that you look at fuse 8 in the box under the hood in the engine compartment and also fuse 8 in the fuse box under the dash. Look for a blown fuse wire or even a subtle crack in the fuse wire as a possible loss of power for the window defogger.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,

Thanks for response. How do I know which is fuse 8 there are no numbers, where do I count from or does it have a name?

Thanks
David

ANSWER: For the box under the hood it is the 30 amp fuse in the rear corner, closest to the fender on the driver side. For the one under the dash it is 10 amp next to the bottom row, far left; (count from the bottom row and go from right to left (4-1,8-5, etc.) with 1 at the low right corner.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,
Thanks again for response, perhaps I should have mentioned before I am in the UK so RHD. I have looked at the dash fuse box and Fuse 8 relates to the airbags. In the box under the hood the only 30amp fuses are for ABS, RAD FAN & STARTER, which all are located in the section below the battery terminal. Thanks again.
David

Answer
Hi David,
The 2001 manual arrived and I find that the fuse #7 in the fuse box under the dash (10 amp) is what provides power to operate the rear window defogger switch/timer which then closes a switch that provides current from fuse #10 in the underhood box (40 amp) to the de-fogger wires and the light. I would start with fuse #7 and check it. Then if that is good let me know and I can tell you how to check the wiring of the switch proper using a voltmeter or glow light. The fuse numbering in the underdash box is as I described it earlier. The #10 fuse under the hood may be labelled EBL (electrical back light) is in the 7th socket from the front of the box on the outside row of 11 fuse sockets
