Chrysler Repair: 1997 Sebring CCd code on travel computer?, 4 digit numbers, odometer reading

Question
I was driving home from the beach this morning & approx 60 miles into the trip, I noticed that the security alarm light was on.  Then I saw the trip computer thingy (technical term?) read CCd.  After a few minutes, the display came back to the direction of travel & outside temp.  I checked the owner's manual, but couldn't find what the CCd message meant.  Is this serious?  I drive my children around in that car.  Do I need to take it in for service and if so, how soon?

Answer
Hi Catherine,
CCd refers to the digital data sharing system that links together the engine/transmission/air bags/body computer/and mini-trip computer/etc.
Chances are most likely that the "bus" (a pair of wires that connects all the components) may have intermittently been disconnected from the mini-trip or the mini-trip itself may have intermittently failed. There is a slight chance that the system failed in the other parts that are more central to the operation of the car. You would probably have noticed that perhaps by a similar message on the odometer reading dial or other malfunctions, were that the case.
You can run a self-diagnostic test of the mini-trip by simultaneously pressing and holding the us/m and step buttons on it and then turn the ignition key from off to run position. You will see the unit go thru a series of displays and finally end with either 'pass', 'fail', or 'CCd'. If fail occurs do the test again, and if it happens again the mini-trip would need to be replaced if you want it to be in service. If CCd appears, then it would be appropriate to have a readout of the memory of the powertrain and body modules using a code reader that plugs into a socket under the dash by the steering column. An Autozone parts store will do that in most cases for free, or an independent shop will charge around $40. Get any fault code 4-digit numbers that appear, ask what they mean, what should be done, and for how much. Then write me back with the code numbers and we can compare that to the shop manuals for direction on how to go.
