Chrysler Repair: Crank shaft position sensor 99 intrepid, crank shaft position sensor, crank sensor

Question
The crank shaft position sensor went out on my 99 Intrepid, I was wondering if replacing it is a job that someone with a little automotive experience could do themselves?  I've done brakes, alternators, and other basic things before.  I wasn't sure if I should leave this one to the professionals, also where is it located on my car?

Answer
Hi Steve,
It is not a difficult task at all. You didn't mention the specific engine but in general you will find the crank sensor on the right side (passenger) just on the back side of the seam between the engine and the transmission where the flex plate that connects them is located. It is just above the surface of the differential housing. It has a connector that you would separate by lifting gently on the tab. Then unbolt the old sensor and pull it up out of the housing. Insert the new one and press the paper-covered* tip firmly against the edge of the flex plate hidden inside. While holding in that position tighten the retaining bolt (about 9 foot-pounds tension). Reconnect the wire. And that is it.

*The paper provides the proper spacing between the flex plate surface and the sensor. It is designed to be rubbed away by the motion of the plate.
