Chrysler Repair: Evaporator replacement for 98 Chry T&C, postal mail, vacuum pump

Question
I have a 98 Town & Country with A/C problems.  It went out this spring so I recharged it with 134a w/ UV dye.  It went out a month later and recharged it again.  Of course, it went out sooner the 2nd time.

I noticed that the drain for the main evap runs slow (ie, takes a long time to dump all the water).  I also noticed that it had a slight UV tint with the UV light.  I noticed no other leaks.

So, Since the van probably isn't worth much more than the cost to professionally repair the evap ($1k+), I'd like to give it a shot.  My brother-in-law has a vacuum pump and recharge gauges. I'm guessing I just need to replace the evap and filter/drier???

I saw that you had offered the pertinent pages from the Chrysler manual to do the work.  If you could copy and mail or scan and email the pages, I'd be very grateful and would send you postage or whatever you want in return.

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi Randy,
I would find it much easier to xerox and postal mail the pages to you. It would be better, I believe, for you to have all the pages from the manual on the AC/heater (40) and also there are a couple of pages (but 32 steps!) on removing the instrument panel in order to get the assembly out (13 more steps). You can't replace the evaporator without removing the entire housing. I haven't worked on AC myself, so I just tell you the story as seen from the manual. Let me know what you would like. I can try to get the pages copied a 6 cents a side from one place (if they aren't busy, otherwise 10 cents), and I can mail 5 pages per ounce so the mailing might be another $1.10.
Use the "thank and rate" tab to reply with your thoughts and mailing address so you don't have to wait for me to be 'available'.
