Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Concord Transmission (95 3.5), chrysler concord, franchise type

Question
The car will start moving in drive, but when speed gets to about 10 mph it shifts out of gear and the engine runs as in neutral. To get the car moving again, you have to stop the car turn off the switch, put the shift in park, start the engine again, put it in drive and it will do the same thing again. The transmission will work in reverse without any problems. This whole problem started when I ran over some deep holes in the road.

Answer
Hi Ed,
Two suggestions: check the hydraulic fluid level on the dipstick for the transmission; jack up the car and examine the underside of the transmission for damage/leaks. If you need to add fluid use only ATF +4 type, never use Dexron type.
If both of these are tried and the problem persists, then it should be taken to a garage that has a diagnostic code reader with a digital data link connector (blue) that fits the Chrysler plug located under the dash to the right of the steering column (it has 6 contacts, rectangular in shape, 3 on a side). The reader has to be capable of accessing the transmission controller where any relevant fault codes would be stored. If you get a code (2-digit number) ask what it means, what is recommended and about how much. Then write back and we can compare that to the shop manual. A competent transmission shop (non-franchise type) should have such a reader or a dealer will also. The price for the readout should be around $40 at the independent shop, likely more at the dealer. There are also codes for the engine performance that are also 2-digit but you are more interested and must get the codes from the transmission controller.
