Chrysler Repair: 99 Sebring belt squeals in first gear/motor grinds when first cranks up, bedix, flex plate

Question
lately my 1991 Sebring JXi has been making this funny grinding noise when it first cranks up, but after giving it some gas....it seems fine, also everytime I come to a stop my belt is squealing in first gear

what do I need to do?

Answer
Hi Lance,
A funny grinding noise when just starting is usually associated with the starter's bedix gear remaining extended (and therefor engaged with the ring gear on the flex plate which it drives to crank over the engine). You might want to make sure that you release the ignition key smartly when you are feeling the engine begin to run on its own. Otherwise, you may want to replace the starter so that this grinding doesn't do damage to the teeth on the flex plate's ring gear.
On the belt squeal, that is uncertain without knowing which belt, and a bit more about whether it squeals at anyother time than stopping. At least press on the belts and see if one is looser than the other. I think you have a typo about the year of 1991, as the Sebring didn't begin until '95. So if you write back restate the year and also the engine.
