Chrysler Repair: Transmission shifter binding:88 T & C, chrysler town and country, shift mechanism

Question
I have a 1988 Chrysler Town and Country with an automatic transmission, with front wheel drive. It has become almost impossible to shift the car into gear. It acts like something may be stuck in the linkage. If I do get it in gear, it runs fine. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Dan,
The shift is accomplished by a cable which may be worn/frayed or it may just need to be inspected/adjusted at the transmission end. So look under the hood while a helper tries to shift the lever to get an idea of how the connection is made. Then dismantle it enough to determine whether it is the shift mechanism on the transmission or the cable/shroud that is binding up. To reattach the cable housing, put the lever in Park and similarly put the trans shifter lever in its park position and then position the shroud so that the slack is taken out of the connection and secure it in that position. Then check that the engine starter will only work in Park or Neutral position of the shift lever.
