Chrysler Repair: 1990 Sundance: loss of power intermittently, code translation, hall effect sensor

Question
When driving my sundance the car will lose power and stall. After approximately 30 seconds it starts again. I changed the fuel filter and it still stalls. Could this be a fuel pump problem? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Rick,
It could be fuel, though I would suspect the spark side of the equation. Best thing to do is check to see if the engine controller has noticed any problems and put a fault code in its memory. Use the igntion key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light which remains "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to assure an accurate count. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form the two digit fault codes. Then go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code translation. 55 is always the last code, it means "end of readout. If you get an 11 that would mean that the hall effect sensor in the distributor is going bad, for example. Let me know if you find something and need specific direction.
