Chrysler Repair: 1997 Dodge Caravan: 20A fuse blows/engine dies, amp fuse, fuse blows

Question
1997 Dodge Caravan 20 amp fuse keeps blowing out.I would be driving down the road and all of a sudden the engine dies. It happened twice. I've pull the steering column off and look and couldn't see any wire loose or any obvious signs of bad wire.

Answer
Hi Gerald,
There are several 20 amp fuese in the box under the hood but I suspect #17 may be the one that is blowing. If not, tell me which one it is. I got virtually the same question yesterday evening and here is how I responded:
That fuse's current passes thru the autoshutdown relay (which will pass the current along if there are signals from the cam and crank sensor saying that the engine is turning over, otherwise it cuts the current off). The current is used for: the heaters of the oxygen sensors, the fuel injectors, the spark coil pack, the engine control computer and the generator field coils. The wires that carry this current are dark/green orange. One of those items listed above is obviously drawing too much current which blows the fuse. I would suggest trying to disconnect the wire at all of the these items and then try cranking the engine (the engine controller can't be easily disconnected so skip that) either by disconnecting the wire if it is alone, or pulling the multi-wire plug for the device if it is contained with other wires. Then see if the fuse blows when you crank it over. If not, then try reconnecting the items one at a time until the fuse blows which would implicate the most recently reconnected item. I would suspect the generator first but it could be any of them.
If you have an ohmmeter you can measure the resistance that each of the wires "looks" at by putting the leads between the pin to which the dark green/orange wire is connected and ground with the wire/plug disconnected. You should find one of them that is less than 1 ohm which would cause the fuse to blow.
... Let me know if you find something suspicious and we'll go from there. Mention which engine you have in the minivan as the wiring of some items may be slightly different.

So let me know if it is #17 or not and what you learn.
