Chrysler Repair: 96 breeze tac and odometer cuts in and out, dash 7, engine controller

Question
my tachometer and odometer cuts in and out periodically (both go out at the
same time) and sometimes when it happens it affects my speedometer causing it
to still read properly but it jumps instead of a smooth motion. could anyone
help me with finding out what is causing this problem .

thanks

Answer
Hi Corey,
The fact that the speedo/odo and the tach are involved simultaneously but the other gauges are not impacted suggests that the problem may not be in the digital data bus which is the circuit that brings the voltages necessary to run many other things of the cluster. The problem is that the speedo/odo is dependent on the transmission output sensor, while the tachometer is dependent on the engine spark sensor. Both however do pass thru the powertrain controller and then to the body controller. I suppose if there is anything I might question it would be the engine controller, but it is hard to prove that is the flaw.
I guess the first things I would check are the fuses in box under the dash # 7,9,11, to see that one of them might not have a subtle crack in it's wire that is opening and closing. Then also check that the ground wire connection point just in front of the driver's side door opening, near the floor (possibly hidden by a panel) is tight.
Then I would keep an eye out for the time when it fails and observe whether any other gauges or indicators are also affected simultaneously. That would be a diagnostic tool. Right now, other than what I listed above I can't identify a single cause for the 3 failures that you mention.
