Chrysler Repair: 2000 Dodge Stratus Will Not Shift out of 1st Gear, solenoid pack, digit code number

Question
Roland, I have a 2000 Dodge Stratus that will not shift out of first gear.  I had the solenoid pack changed out 40k miles ago which cleared up a similar problem.  It was very expensive, so I would like to try to do the repair this time.  The car has a bad battery which requires it to be jumped to start.  I don't know if this would be the cause of the problem or not, but I plan to change it out.  Is this a solenoid pack problem?  Where can I get information on how to change this out?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi John,
In actuality it is only operating in 2nd gear, what is called limp-in which avoids unnecessary damage.
The best approach is to get a fault code readout from the underdash socket which accesses the digital data bus so you can retrieve the transmission fault code(s). Once you have the 4-digit code number(s) we are then in a position to see what the manuals say to do. There are many possibilities so take advantage of the self-diagnostic capability to find out what is wrong. Possibly the a low-normal battery voltage could be involved, but a long shot.
For possibly getting a free readout, try an Autozone parts store. Otherwise an independent shop might give you the lowest price readout compared to a dealer.
