Chrysler Repair: 1999 300M: can overfilling the tank cause shutdown?, saleman, gas tank

Question
We just purchased a used 300M.  The dealership filled it with gasoline before we drove it off the lot.  The car while driving has just died for no reason 3 different times now.  Twice yesterday and once this morning.  My saleman said it was because he overfilled the gas tank and that is what is causing the car to shut down while driving.  Is this true?
Thank you,
Stacey

Answer
Hi Stacey,
That is a new one on me...never heard of it. I would believe there is another explanation. Ask the dealer to perform a 'fault code readout of the powertrain controller's memory' because the chances are there is a clue as to why this is happening stored therein. Ask for the code number, what it means, and what they are going to do in response to that? Then if they don't fix it properly write back and tell me what the number was that came out of the memory (should begin with a P then 4 numbers follow). That is the most efficient and direct way to find the cause of a problem in today's complex vehicles. I have a suspicion but I would like to learn of the code. Also, tell me which size engine is in the car (2.7, 3.2, or 3.5L) as the fix my vary depending upon that.
