Chrysler Repair: 1999 town & country: battery temp sensor high, digit code number, diagnostic code

Question
check engine light comes on, mechanic says diagnostic code says it is a "hot battery"  what is this & how is it fixed

Answer
Hi Pat,
I would prefer to know the actual 4-digit code number, but in any case I believe rather than the battery being "hot" that the temperature sensor located near the battery has failed or a wire that supplies it is grounded or open (there is no code for a "hot battery" as such). The purpose of the sensor is to adjust the charge rate coming from the alternator (which is handled by the powertrain controller) so as to not overcharge/undercharge the battery by taking into account the ambient temp near the battery. So getting a new battery temp sensor would be the likely first step, after looking over the wires to the sensor near by to be sure that they haven't had their insulation eaten away by battery acid which would be a good idea before getting the sensor.  I will look into finding the exact location of the sensor for you and follow-up with a 'comment' unless you asked not to have reader add-ons. So watch for that in a day or so.
