Chrysler Repair: 90 3.3L no start, crank sensor, sensor signals

Question
Hi Roland,
I have asked a question about this vehicle before and you were a great help.  My 90 dogde grand caravan 3.3L v6 won't start.  Last time it was the crank sensor.  I changed it and it was fine.  It is doing it again.  I changed plugs, wires and the crank sensor.  Right after I changed the crank sensor it started and ran fine.  The next day it will not start again.  It is showing codes 11,12 15 and 55.  I have looked up these codes and seen that 12 is battery disconnect which I did to clear old codes and 55 is the end of codes.  12 and 15 pertain to things I thought I fixed but I am now at a loss.  Any ideas now?

Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,
Do you get spark? If so, then the crank sensor is presumably working.
My '90 manual doesn't list a code 54 (for a problem with the cam sensor), so there is evidentally no ability for the controller to see if it is faulty. The cam is for fuel injector synchronization. Are the spark plugs wet showing that fuel is being injected?
The 12 code is of course for battery disconnect which will happen when you erase the codes. 15 is a missing distance sensor which should show up as no speedo/odo operation.
You could verify the wires from the crank and cam to the engine controller, and also turn the engine over with a wrench and socket on the crank bolt and while the ignition is on see if you get periodic pulsing on the signal wires for both sensors (between 0.3 and 5.0V when measured between the signal wire and the ground wire for the sensor) That would be the acid test of each sensor. The wire codes are: black/light blue=sensor ground, cam sensor signal=tan yellow (and should be connected to pin 44), crank sensor signal=gray/black (and should be connected to pin 24), all pins at the controller 60-way plug.
So see what you find out about spark and fuel presence and if you are getting sensor signals. Please let me know how the troubleshoot works out.
