Chrysler Repair: Chrysler 1999 LHS ticking noise at start up of engine, engine oil additive, fresh oil

Question
Hi, I have a Chrysler 1999 LHS that makes a ticking noise when started after sitting 3-4 days when cold outside. What is that noise? How can I go about stopping it. Costly repairs, minor? Please let me know. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Donnell,
Chances are it is the hydraulic lash adjusters that have too low a pressure to close the temporary gap between the valve stem and the rocker arm. You might find that by simply changing the oil if it hasn't been done say for about 5,000 miles would eliminate or reduce the noise. There is no issue with damage, it is merely 'cosmetic', so don't worry about that. If that doesn't fix it, then the next time you need to change oil you might put some engine oil additive in that loosens build-up of dirt/crud before you drain and refill with fresh oil and a new filter. You can also try going one step higher in the oil "weight" which will raise the operating pressure and pump up/maintain the oil pressure/residual oil in the lash adjusters. I don't think you have a repair issue here. Just a combination of wear and build-up that can be mitigated by means of oil strategies.
