my brother has a 2000 dodge intrepid. it started missing and was hard to start afterit warmed up. itold him to replace coolant sensor.but he kept driving itand wires going to #2 and#6 coil wires melted along with the knock sensor wires.now it wont start there is no fire at any of the coils with key on. it had 4codes #1 coolant sensor voltage to high#2 coil#2and #6 are not reaching peak current at right time. next was sometimes cannot see cam and crank sensor signals. any help would be appericated

Hi Charles,
I think he has fried the wires not only to the spark plugs and the knock sensor, but also the cam and and the crank sensors. I would like to know exactly what the fault code numbers are and then begin a wire by wire visual and electrical test of each of the absent sensors and also check the coolant sensor to see what resistance it reads when cold (should be 7,000 to 14,000 ohms at 70F), remove it and heat it in a pan of boiling water and see what it reads (should be 700-1000 ohms). You can decide whether to do this yourself for him or let a competent shop unsnarl the mess he has brought upon himself by ignoring your suggestion and the behavior of the engine until it now won't run. The cam and crank sensor have their limits as to how hot they can get before breaking down so even if the wires check out there is a reasonable chance that they are also shot. I have the '98 shop manual that shows the wiring for the engine control system but it differs a bit between the three possible engines. So if you want the wiring diagrams let me know which engine. I can xerox and postal mail them to you if you would be so kind as to reimburse me for the copying (9 cents per side) and the postage, which you can do by sending me back stamps after you receive them.
Let me know the specific fault codes as well.
You can communicate your address and info via the "thank and rate tab" if I am shown to be "maxed out".

Answer
Hi Charles,
Thanks for the praise, kind evaluation, and nomination.
The 0118 is for the coolant temp sensor being off value, the 0353 and 0356 are for problems with firing the coils 2 and 6, and the 1391 is about the intermittent signal from the crank or the cam sensor. I would suggest that you check the cam sensor wiring and if that is ok then change that sensor and see what happens. It is needed to fire the fuel injectors and the spark coils in the proper sequence so it may very well defeat the the spark coil function entirely in the "eyes" of the engine control module.  So replacing it may very well correct the no spark situation. Let me know if it doesn't.
