Chrysler Repair: 93 van wont start, no codes., head gasket leak, fuel injection system

Question
Hi Roland,

My dad's 1993 conversion van with the TBI 2bbl 318 won't start.  He was driving and it just conked out.  Prior it had a hard time idling.  He needed to keep his foot on the gas, cold or warm, even at red lights.

No codes.  We get 40+psi on the fuel rail with the key on, and while cranking.  We are getting spark.  I hooked up my timing light and it is showing spark.  We poured fuel down the throttle body, and no change.  The engine turns over, but will not even try to fire.  No spitting, or sputtering.  WOT makes no difference.  The coolant is low in the radiator.  No idea where it went.  No smoke, no evidence of leak.

What do you suspect?  I suspect the MAP, or coolant sensor.   Both should produce a code.  I have no code.  No evidence of head gasket.  How about the EGR?

Thanks for any help.

Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
I haven't seen the 318 and 2bbl terminology associated with a fuel injected engine. I'm also not familiar with a "conversion" van. So I am limited in my ability to respond to your questions. Assuming that you have a fuel injection system with a engine control module and all the sensors, I agree with all the possibilities that you mentioned. When you say no codes, do you at least get a 55 which means end of readout? If not then I suspect that there may be something wrong with the control module, or maybe the check engine light isn't even working?
The coolant being low in the radiator makes me too wonder about head gasket leak, but of course if you can't get it to run you won't be able to look for white smoke from the exhaust. You would do well to check compression for a possible leak situation. I always would want to check that the egr is not ajar. So check the valve stem for freedom of movement using a screwdriver in the slot of the stem. I wouldn't run out and buy a MAP or a coolant sensor without a code for that, except as a last resort. So if you write back tell me which exact engine is in there. I guess it could be a 318 set up for FI but I don't have any wiring diagrams for that to help you with. Good luck and let me know what you learn from a few of these checks.
