Chrysler Repair: 1989 New Yorker trans fault code 39, limp-in, solenoid switches, shaft speed

Question
the trans goes into limp in and the only code that appears is 39  any ideas

Answer
Hi Scott,
The possibilities are so numerous that I will set aside all the internal causes which will prompt a rebuild and focus instead on only the things you might check or have checked to eliminate the less expensive possibilities.
The code means there is an error in the ratio of the converter output speed and the output shaft speed. That of course could be due to slipping clutch(es). But set that aside as the rebuild default.
The 89 manual says:
damaged speed sensor gear teeth (if the speedo is working right this would probably eliminate that possibility, other wise it is the likely cause). If so, did someone recently pull the right half shaft out of the trans? That will damage the sensor if you don't remove the sensor first.
Faulty cooling system
Problems with the internal pressures, valve body and the solenoid switches that can be tested for via the test ports
Plugged fluid filter, worn pump
Low fluid level
So I would suggest that you check these out yourself/at a knowledgeable trans shop and see if any of those seem to be the cause. If not then the rebuild is probably in the cards.
Let me know if the trans shop wants the specs for the A604 trans and I can xerox and postal mail them to you. Use the "rate the expert" tab where there is a space for text in the comments section.
