Chrysler Repair: Code 15: 92 Electronic trans limp-in mode, chrysler lebaron, 1992 chrysler lebaron

Question
I have a 1992 chrysler lebaron and its stuck in 2nd gear, the code is 15,how do i know which sensor to pull? the advance auto said theres 2 of them.

Answer
Hi Russ,
There indeed may be two output speed sensors on that trans. I assume that you are getting the code 15 via the ignition key readout, correct? In later years the extension housing sensor was dispensed with. It is used for the speedo signal rather than the trans shifting control, so I am not sure that is why you have limp in. Is your speedo working?
The two sensors are: on the front of the trans at very rear end, just to the left (driver's side of the vertical shifting rod), and on the transaxle extension housing's top surface (that is the part of the trans from which the two half shafts extend). I believe the code 15 means that the latter sensor's signal are not being receive by the engine controller because you can't read the codes from the trans controller without a readout box and separate access plug (under the dash). The sensor is driven by the right half-shaft and its gear can be damaged if a mechanic removes the half-shaft without first removing the sensor You can check whether it is working by turning the half shaft and looking with an ohmmeter at the resistance between its two terminals. There should be eight pulses per wheel revolution.
If you want to verify that it isn't the trans speed sensor you could have a shop with the Chrysler DRB II and 'body connector' plug do a readout of the trans controller for fault codes related to that sensor.
I can't be sure though that the extension housing sensor failure would cause the limpin mode, so maybe a readout of the transcontroller would be good to do. Let me know what you find out about that housing sensor, and if you get a code read of the trans controller.
