Chrysler Repair: Transmission removal, cv joints, shaft removal

Question
Hello! I own a 1993 Chrysler Dynasty with a 3.3 litre engine and a A604 4 speed auto transmission. I am just starting to remove the transmission and wanted to know what has to be removed to get the axles out. I took the large nut off the end of the axle, took the caliper off and I am now stuck at that step. Thanks in advance for info. Any pictures would be a great help. Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,
I hope you have a shop manual for this job because there are too many fine points you need to know to get it done without error. On the half-shaft removal the next step is to loosen and remove the bolt on the bottom of thee steering knuckle that retains the top of the ball joint in the bottom of the knuckle. Then carefully separate the ball joint from the knuckle with a lever, without damaging the seal on the ball joint or the cv-boot. Once you have those two parts separated you can pivot the steering knuckle and hub assembly laterally outward while holding the outer cv joint from moving out with it, and the tip of axle from which you earlier remove the large nut will slip thru the housing and be freed. Support it with a wire to the suspension nearby while you go about separating the other end from the transaxle housing extension.  When removing the inner joint it should slide out of the trans but don't pull on the shaft, rather separate the joint from the trans by gently levering it. The CV joints do not have any ability to be stessed along their axes so you don't want to pull on them to remove the axle, because they can separate.
So that is the detail on removing the half shaft. But it should be covered in the manual which I hope you will have available for the rest of this job.
