Chrysler Repair: 94 labaron convt interor lights, plugs and sockets, warning bells

Question
I have a 1994 Chrysler convertible and the interior lights will not. Not when the doorsa are opened or the dash switch is turned on.  They will light if I take a separate ground to the light.

Answer
Hi Bert,
It sounds like you have body computer plug/socket gremlins, a typical issue with the convertible. The body computer is mounted to the right of the passenger's right shin, above the kick panel on the inside of the "cowl'. It has a couple of plugs on its top side, 25 pins in each. If you don't see it, just listen because it also has a speaker which broadcasts the warning bells. What happens is the water gets in around the windshield and drips down on the plugs and sockets which can cause temporaty shorts and bad connections. So unmount the computer and then pull the two plugs noting which goes where. The black plug has most of the wires and particularly the ones for the lights. This system uses the computer to both power the lights and to ground the lights to complete the circuits. So I suspect the grounding pin has some crud on it or corrosion that is preventing a clean connection. You might get some spray contact cleaner from an electronics supply store and clean the plug pins and the socket. It will evaporate away and leave you with a better set of connections and no water.
See then if the lights doen't work like they are supposed to.
