Answer
Hi Abdoul,
I can't say for sure whether there is anything wrong with the engine's computer. Does the engine idle like it always has, and in neutral will it rev up with the pedal action as always? Did the guy say why he thought the computer is not good/did he do any tests that showed this to be the case?
Are you aware that the transmission also has a computer? And as with the engine computer it has the ability to recognize malfunctions and record them in the form of a two-digit numbers (fault code). The engine computer can be requested to tell you if it has any fault codes stored in its memory. To ask it, turn the ignition switch: "off-on-off-on-off-on" and leave it "on". Accomplish that ignition switching quickly, within no more than 5 seconds of time. Then watch the "check engine" light to begin to flash, pause, flash, pause, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause and write down the numbers of flashes. The last two groups of flashes will always be 5 flashes in each. You should repeat the readout again to verify the counts, and again to make really sure. Then tell me the numbers that you have recorded. There is no code that says the engine computer is bad; about the only clue would be if it didn't even respond with two groups of five flashes or didn't flash at all. So try to initiate the readout and let me know what happens.
On the transmission computer, it also stores codes, but it takes a readout box special tool to read its codes. In the case of the transmission computer, there are codes that will tell you if there is a failure of the computer. But did the guy try to readout the codes on the transmission computer or did he just observe car's functioning without hooking anything up to it?
If he didn't try to readout the engine or the transmission codes I don't know how he could conclude that there is something wrong with either computer.
So write back and tell me exactly what the guy did when you brought the car back to him. I am suspicious that he may have just told you that to get rid of you. HO long ago did he do the rebuild, and did it work well for any length of time?
