Answer
Hi Jean-Marc,
On the downshift problem, I can only base my advice on the shop manuals that I own. Unfortunately, almost every symptom of the 4-speed automatic transaxle that you probably have could have multiple reasons. (The four speed usually has both a D and an OD choice, is that what you have?) There is also an electronic control system which monitors the functions of the unit and recognizes some malfunctions and stores those in memory as a code#. The code # can be readout by a Chrysler dealer and some independent transmission shops (it requires a "DRB" or equivalent hand held unit that is plugged into a jack in the car under the dash). That readout might cost an hour of labor time. Now an alternative approach is to look at the possible causes, then do those that are inexpensive to see if that solve the problem. If not, then you can go to the readout and based on the results effect the repair.
In the list of symptoms, the only one that seems to sound like your description is "harsh downshift from 2 to 1".
Among the simple causes are:
engine idle speed too low (or possibly too high because of the excess forward motion that you feel). You might have a simple vacuum hose leak that is affecting the engine idle.
the transmission fluid level may be too low (have you checked that). If you need fluid be sure to get it from a Chrysler dealer as this is very sensitive to the right stuff.
the filter in the transmission might be clogged, or the fluid could be degraded (that would be resolved by draing the pan and replacing the fluid and filter) other owners tell me that some of their problems were cured by that service (but no guarantees).
then you might try the readout of codes and go from there with the service that those suggest.
Because the cost of major internal repair is so high, I would run through this list first before accepting a major job as being necessary.
Be sure you go to a dealer with a good reputation or an independent shp that really knows this transmission well, will use the Chrysler fluid, and has the DRB
