Classic/Antique Car Repair: Re;Rolls Royce, rolls royce and bentley, rolls royce cars

Question
Hi Jorge.
I have a 1979 silver shadow 2 which is a dream to drive and has very low mileage. It starts first time when cold.It starts first time when hot if started within five minutes or so but if left any longer it turns over quite a few times before firing up.It seems as if the fuel drains from the carbs because if I switch on the ignition for a few seconds before turning the starter it seems to correct it.Any ideas on how i might rectify this. Many thanks.
Maurice.

Answer
Hello Maurice, The SU Carburettors fitted to You Shadow sound like they are in need of service. it is the nature of their design, periodic disassembly and adjustments must be made to insure optimum performance and engine health. case in point one unit could develop a lean condition that can ruin valves. your issue could be in the fuel floats. but there is no way of correcting one issue without disassembly cleaning and correcting both carburettors. and of course ounce removed the complete set up / rebuild must be done. special tools and specific knowledge is required for this procedure, if you cannot find someone trained in older Rolls Royce cars your second best choice is to find someone familiar with US carburettors. the dealerships are just about pointless since all they know now is BMW and Volkswagen products badged with Rolls Royce and Bentley labels. where are you located if I may ask?
