Classic/Antique Car Repair: speedometer, chev impala, lubriplate

Question
I HAVE A 1958 CHEV. IMPALA THAT HAS BEEN RESTORED.THE TRANS HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM A POWER GLIDE TO A TURBO 350 . THE SPEEDO WORKS BUT IS VERY ERRATIC. CABLE & HOUSING ARE NEW. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?

                   THANKS   BOB

Answer
Cable and housing are new, but are the guts themselves? Old speedos can get touchy; no wonder considering how they used to work.

Also, did you lube the cable thoroughly with Lubriplate? If you didn't and it's running dry in its sheath, it will heat up and snap in no time.

These are cheap to fix, and if you don't have success with my tips, get them to a good speedo service place. Check online for one near you.
