Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1941 mercury wipers, Windshield wiper motor service

Question
I have a 1941 mercury with wipers problems. I pull the wiper button out and the wipers will go up but they will not go back down unless I push the button back in.I replaced all 3 hoses, i can hear air leaking coming from the small hose going to the wiper(it is a new hose and it is on the fitting securely). If it is the vacum motor can it be repaired.(could I repair it)? Since there are three hoses.  Is there a way you could explain to me if I have all three hoses going to right places? Thank you farmermoon

Answer
The fact that the wiper has to be turned on and off to make the full traverse of the arms indicates a problem in the wiper motor itself - the reversing mechanism isn't functioning.

Unless you are an experienced tinkerer, I don't advise taking these motors apart -they are quite tricky to understand and to make work right.

The wiper motor can be repaired - there are a couple of vendors who specialize in these.  The vendor I use for this service is:

WINDSHIELD wiper motor rebuilding service by Clean Sweep Windshield Wiper Motor Service, prewar, $85; postwar, $80 plus shipping; will rebuild chrome motors, call before chroming; hydro-wipe, 63-70s T-Birds and Lincolns, $150 plus shipping; all work guaranteed. Previously Kent Jaquith now Justin Develter, 1550 Majestic Rock Dr, Terrebonne, OR 97760, 541-420-9098, 541-548-1010, OR; cleansweep_ws@q.com

Normally, there is only one hose required to operate the wiper motor.
I don't understand why you find 3 hoses on the wiper motor - perhaps your car has some other vacuum operated accessory installed.  Windshield washers, power antennae, cigarette ashtray cleaners are the only things I know of that would require extra hoses - but I'm not that familiar with your particular model car.
