Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1963 mercury meteor neutral safety switch, neutral safety switch, mercury meteor

Question
260 automatic... i believe they called it a merc o matic...it will start when you bypass the solenoid and runs great..but wont start with the key... i replaced the ignition switch and the solenoid but still no luck... thinking it could be the neutral safety switch but i'm having a heck of a time finding one..... any thoughts on where i could find one or what else it could be would be great

Answer
The safety switch is usually mounted right on the trans.  It screws in.  When you say "by pass the solenoid", do you mean manually close the solenoid?  All the solenoid does is make the big contact between the starter and the battery.  Nothing to do with the ignition.  If the key does not energize the solenoid, then just trace the key switch to the solenoid.  Put a hot wire to the solenoid for a moment and see if it makes the connection.
If it will start, then I don't think it is the safety switch.  You are not bypassing that.
Sorry I can't be of much help to you.  Model A's don't have solenoids.
Hang in there.  You will figure it out.
