Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1930 Ford Model A tuneup, spark lever, moveable point

Question
How do I replace points and condensor and set points and firing order?  I have specs but need to know proceedure.  Any information you can give me would be helpful.  Thanks.

Answer
If you have a Model a, the first thing you have to do is get the Model A mechanics handbook, by Les andrews.  It is a wonderful book and we all have a copy.  cost is about $35 from MARC or any of the parts suppliers.  Get the red one, not the green one.
I'll give you the high points of what you are asking for, but it is more involved than I care to type.
Get the front piston up to TDC by reversing the pin that is on the timing gear cover.  right behind the radiator.  Take it out and reverse it.  Rotate the engine until the pin drops into a small dimple on the timing gear.  that is top dead center.  Put in the new points and set them to about 0.017-0.20in. gap.  Connect a light to the moveable point arm and ground.  turn the key on, spark lever up. Rotate the dist. cam clockwise until the light just goes out when the rotor is pointing toward the right ft. wheel.  That is the contact for the #1 cylinder.  Tighten the cam screw and pull the spark lever down two notches.  The light should light.  If it does not, repeat the process until you get it right.

The book explains this in detail and will help you do all the other stuff you will have to do in owning an A.

Hope this helps and good luck. If you need more info, let me know.
