Question
QUESTION: need help...put on new cap ,rotor ,wires ,plugs,..easy to start esp cold...run good on dry cold days..usually when it warm up it seems to flood,,,runs rough .black smoke..very hard on fuel.sometimes it works fine still hard on fuel app 8 miles per gallon also timing is on correct...app 60000 miles..some of the faculm line are missing ....do you think carb should be replaced or any other part ...thanks bill

ANSWER: This car is new enough that it has many smog reducing features - all the vacuum lines must be connected correctly, before it will run right.  The vacuum line hookup is given on a pasted on white sticker somewhere under the hood - follow it to get everything back right, then see how it runs. If the sticker has been removed or painted over, you will have to get a copy of the factory shop manual which will have the  same information.   Or, you can take it to a good tune-up shop, they should be able to straighten it out for you. The richness may be cured right away, or you may have to investigate the choke setting and temperature operated air inlet flapper valve - something is blocking the air from getting into the carburetor.  It is also possible that the carburetor has a problem, but don't spend money on that until you have eliminated all the easy, cheap things.

QUESTION: hi ...just one more question..the bronco is 4x4..she runs transfer case, driveshaft ,front rearend, both axles all the time..has auto hubs..don't use 4x4 but like having..but real bad mileage..any ideas..also could you tell me what is normal for this truck..fuel mileage.. once again thanks bill

Answer
4X4s get poorer mileage than similar 2 wheel drive vehicles, because of the added weight, wind resistance (it's higher, remember) and friction of the extra gearcase, differential, and heavy duty suspension.   Also, typically, the axles are geared for better pulling power, so the engine turns higher RPM to go at the same speed than a 2WD version would turn.  An engine gives optimum mileage at about 2500 RPM - so if you have a tachometer, try to drive in the highest gear and at that RPM - that will be about as good as can be done with this Bronco.

I'm not signed on here as a truck expert, so I'm really stepping out of my field to guess at this, but as long as you don't hang me for being wrong, I would estimate that the best you will ever see from this Bronco would be maybe 15 MPG on the highway, driving with a very light foot, and never using the 4X4 feature.  You won't get near that with around town driving.  But, get yourself a professional tune up at a shop with an engine analyzer so they can set everything up the best it can be, and be sure to tell them that you are looking for the best MPG it can deliver.

Modern 4X4s do better, but that is because the technology has improved a lot over the last 25 years since yours was built.

I have a 65 Ford ex-Army 3/4 ton long bed full size Pickup truck, with the very small 240 Cu In 6 cylinder engine, and it gets horrible mileage, even with the tiny engine, and I never drive it over 55 MPH even on the highway.  It gets about 10 MPG on it's best day, even on a trip.  Mostly, I just use it on the ranch for off road chores, so it doesn't really matter to me what MPG it gets, but my son has taken it on camping trips and really pays a lot for gas.

Good luck with it!
