Classic/Antique Car Repair: Restore 38 Ford to stock, splined shaft, steering wheel

Question
Dick,
In restoring I want to repair the steering wheel and repair it.I was told that the horn button twist off and the nut can be backed off. I have tried with no success. Someone also told me that the steering rod must come out to take off the wheel. Any suggestions would be greatful.

Have a great Holiday Season.

Thanks,

Steve

Answer
To remove the steering wheel, you must have a steering wheel puller tool which fastens into the base of the steering wheel threaded holes and presses on the center rod to force the wheel up off the splined shaft after loosening the large nut in the center of the wheel.  Once you have the wheel loose, you can remove the tool, remove the center nut and washer, and then pull the wheel up off by hand. The center rod does not need to be removed to take the wheel off.  The steering wheel puller can be borrowed from the Auto-Zone store.

My best wishes to you for the Holiday Season,

Dick
