Classic/Antique Car Repair: Can you help with these issues?, tiny spark, heater core

Question
I think I have resolved the overheating issue somewhat on my 64 Pontiac 230 6 cyl.
I found a shroud but it was a bugger to get it on so I didnt.Friend said shroud was meant for a V8 not straight 6?
Then I took the old rad to get rodded out. When I put it on it started leaking!
I was lucky enough to find another. The car still runs hot but now the water temp gauge maxes out at 225 instead of burying the needle at over 250 like it did before. The old farmer that I got it from said that those engines always ran hot anyway?
Today it is over 30 degrees celcius up here which would be in the 90's farenheit.
Also, got a brand new battery. After not driving for two weeks it was dead and I had to charge it up. I wish I could figure that one out too!
Thanks for any help, really appreciate it!

Answer
You have not mentioned the thermostat which is number one when dealing with heating issues. Also, has your heater core been bypassed and if so, how was it done.

Need to know these two things before continuing.

On the battery issue, disconnect and look for a tiny spark when you touch the cable end back to the battery. As long as you have this tiny spark the battery will always run down over time without use. It can be as minor as the clock on the radio.
