Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1972 dodge dart rough running, vacuum leaks, vacuum hoses

Question
QUESTION: I have a 72 dodge dart, 225 slant six. I just got the car and it was in the desert for a longtime. driven a little, but not much. When I got the car, it ran, but died a lot. It always dies the same way, with the brake applyed in drive. Like at a stop sign. I have replaced the distributor, rebuilt the carb, Holley one barrel, replaced the fuel pump, which seems to have made it run worse,replaced the points with an electric unit. Nothing seems to help. I have started thinking about the old unplugged air pump. Just have no idea where to go from here.

ANSWER: Thomas
HI- well is the dist. in right- is no #1 on the n#1 plug wire when you pop the cyld to tdc. and are the plug wires all on right. also fuel filter.if you are running in a real hot climate I would flush the system than just re-move the thermostat for good in the hot weather. no need for it there.check all vacuum lines, and check for vacuum leaks, if you get a can of starting fluid , and spray a shot where you think there is a vacuum leak the motor will rev up. when you spray it.as far as the fuel pump do you have a regulator on it, is it getting too much fuel.check the air pump for a vacuumed leak.   ok

QUESTION: The distributor is in the right spot, and i can get a good timing set-up. its at about 4 btdc now. I have not regulator for the fuel pump. But I removed the little cap on the top while it was running and checked fuel level and it was perfect. I have replaced all vacuum hoses and put clamps on everything. Sprayed around the intake, hoses, nothing seems to be leaking. The air pump is actually unhooked and I make a blocking plate for it so its completly out of there now. It runns better, but still really rough when its in gear and I have the brake applied. Like at stop signs.
ANSWER: Thomas;
Hi- I would do a compression test on each cyld. and check each valve tappet and spring, and see if you have a bad plug or wore.

QUESTION: I did a compression test. all cylnders are between 100 and 120 pds. I did a valve adjustment also, they were loose oddly and all the springs looked great and were working well. rockers are getting plenty of oil.
ANSWER: it sounds like the booster is bad or a vacume leak

QUESTION: Do you mean the brake booster?
I cant find ANY vacuum leaks. I have clamped, and rehosed everything and sprayed everywhere.

Thomas
I would try a different carb. to see if it works. and I would not block off the booster tank. I would remove it and put in a std. master cyld. - where is the line from the booster connected to, is it plugged up. it might be the declaratory pump.  .
