Classic/Antique Car Repair: Timing, dual carb, vacume

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I just installed a dual carb set up and reinstalled dist. and now the idle is extremely high. carb set up was preset. is my timing way off?
ANSWER: Bobby-
HI well did you remove the dist. and put it back in- if so was it done right ?
did you pop # 1 plug and get the timing mark on t.d.c than check to see if the rotor is on the rotor facing at the no# 1 plug wire. if yes you are on no#1 , try to time it at apx. 6 or 8 % do so with the vacuumed to the dist. plugged. than adj. each carb separate.  it might take you a few times. or if you have a gauge for the carbs.

Hi  well if the dist is in right , and the timing is ok than you might have to turn it down some- as far as the carbs they must be tuned to your motor, every motor is different so you might have to turn down the idle and try to adj. the air/fuel screws. ok as I stated you might have to play with it , or if you can get a  carb setting gauge to adj. them with.

QUESTION: HI, I turned down the idle and adj. the air/fuel screws it made very little differance. but I did get some detonation after the engine was turned off. Engine seems to run a little warmer. Thanks

Answer
Bob;
OK  now that it is sideling I would try to set the timing with the vacuumed line going to the dist. if you have one un plug it and plug the end so you loose no vacume. and now try to set the idle at 6 or 8 deg. try it at 6 than 8 , etc and see what is best. also when the timing is done and the vacume is hooked back up , re set the carb adj. screws. do the front first and the second last and when you do the second one turn it out 1.4 of a turn more than the first. try it. ok
with set ups tike the one you have you should use a special type of gauge to set the carbs, but now a days with all of the duel carbs and large holleys,etc and blowers  you do not see as many like yours, its a shame because you have one of the old type hot rod set ups. you will have to play with it, you will get it, keep records on each time you adj. and set something.  ok
