Classic/Antique Car Repair: 57 Chevy heater, heater hoses, don hi

Question
I have a 57 Bel Air with the deluxe heater (no A/C).  I bought it earlier this year and tried the heater for the first time a couple weeks ago.  At first I got a lot of heat, too much, and tried to turn it down, but the heat didn't modulate any till the lever was all the way off, then it went cold.  Tried to sneak it back to a little heat, and got nothing.

Lever seems too easy to move so I suspect it came off the valve.

My Chevy service manual doesn't seem to have a section on this valve, so I am hoping you can tell me what if any parts have to come off (and how to get them off) to access this valve and get some heat.

I appreciate very much any advice you can give, I am a fair mechanic, but knowing how stuff comes apart is a big part of the battle, and I don't want to start tearing into stuff without knowing what needs to come apart.

The system is leak free, with new looking parts underhood, radiator is full and the car runs cool.  The heater hoses are new and look routed correctly.  That I got heat for a while indicates the system is probably OK except for the lever that controls the heat.  That IS connected at the controls, and the cable looks brand new going towards the heater.  I can't find anything loose in a quick check of what I could reach under the dash.

again, thanks for your help.

Answer
Don;
 Hi- if you can look under the dash you should be able to see the cable and you should see it going right to the valve. it might have poped off  or broke. I can not find the book for that year at this time, if I do and you still have trouble get back 2 me  ok..
