Hello, I have a 1952 mGTD with the engine in parts .I have a 1978 MGB bad car good engine and drive train .What would I have to do inorder for the 'B' engine /drivetrain to work in the TD.I would appriciate any help with this thks. jim

Hi Jim,
I think it would make the TD a more drivable car in todays trafic but it is not a "Just bolt in". You would need to fabricate motor mounts and do some work in the clutch system using the clutch master cylinder etc from the "B". Any driveshaft shop could make you up a driveshaft and you would have to fabricate the trans mount. The differential I think will bolt in but you may need to do some work on the hand brake connection and the brake lines.
It depends on what tools and equipment you have available. Amoung all the conversions done like that it is not the hardest if you have some equipment and a little fabricating skills. If possible I would try not to alter the TD any permenent way so it could be put back as a pure TD if possible because a pure TD is worth much more than a modified TD.
I hope this helps you decide what to do.
Howard          Thank you for you help . I did not realize that I would have to put in the rear axle too .Can I still use the TD wheels? Are thre any companies out there that would have any kits for this type of engine swap.To reafirm Iguess that I can't just swap the engine with out useing the transmission and rear from the 'B'  is this correct   .  thks again jim walsh

Answer
It would be more difficult to make a engine to trans adapter plate and try to make a clutch and flywheel fit the TD transmission, not even counting the starter motor fit. than to make a trans mount, clutch master cylinder and driveshaft to be able to use the "B" trans.
As for the wheels, are the wheels wire or disk? If they are disk measure center of a stud across to the center of the stud across from it and compare it to the measurement Of the "B". You could use the TD rear end but keep in mind it is light duty as compared to the "B" rear end. If they are wire on both, they will not switch as the spline is different on a "B".
What you are talking about doing can be done but it is not a easy job. John's Cars in Texas have several different kinds of conversion kits for British cars but I don't know if they ever made one for a TD. You might do a search on the net to see if anyone makes a kit.
