Classic/Antique Car Repair: 57 Chevy Bel Air Transmission Leak, 57 chevy bel air, automatic transmitions

Question
I have a 57 Chevy Bel Air Hardtop with 2 speed powerglide.  I have owned the car for about a year and have had a transmission leak the whole time.  I have had it to the shop at least 5 times with no success.  I have had all the seals replaced with original parts and had the speedometer cable housing gasket machined out and replaced.  It's seems to be fine for about a week and then it starts leaking again.  Two transmission shops have been unable to fix the problem or understand where the leak is coming from.  During the last leaking episode (just a few days ago), it leaked just over a quart so it is a major problem.

Answer
Robert:

First of all, you have to know that the 2 speed powerglide is a very complicated transmition system, because it was one of the 1st. automatic transmitions.

The leaking problem is very common in this type of transmition,  so as you did, it's very important to change all the seals often.

Due your information, i think that your problem is originated because the system of returning transmition.

This system works when you are driving in second gear and you press the acellerator top down. this event produce a suction and the transmition pass down to first gear in order to give more aceleration to the car.

This system have conection of the transmition with the suction system of the engine, and this conection has a seal.

maybe this seal is broken and when you press the acelerator top down, the oil of the engine is suctioned by transmition and droped to the floor.

Hoping to help you.

Daniel
