Dodge Repair: water pump 04 Ram 5.9 liter Cummins engine

Question
I put a new water pump on my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9 liter Cummins engine and when I test drove it blew out cold air temperature gauge did not go up and when it did it will way over 200 would this happen if I installed the pump upside down

Answer
Hi Jim,
The manual says there is a 'weep hole' on body of the pump (which releases small amounts of coolant when the seal wears) and that hole should be 'down' not 'up' if installed correctly. I am not certain though why if that were not the case the coolant would not flow properly but if so then remount it. It does say that a 'sign' of a defective pump is that it does not pump water through the long heater hose to the cabin HVAC unit.
In the refilling instruction it does point out that the engine has a couple of one way valves which let air escape when the system is being refilled but will close once the system is filled with fluid. It calls them "jiggle pins" but I don't know where they are. It could be that you have air trapped in system particularly in the heater core 'loop' and that is preventing the flow. Are both heater hoses equally hot, which they should be?
That is what I can suggest as possible causes.
Please read the PS (below) and respond to it.
Thanks,
Roland
