Dodge Repair: 1999 Dodge Durango 5.9: no start/no spark, dodge durango, crank sensor

Question
I have 1 1999 Dodge Durango 5.9 with 260,000+ miles. I was driving on the interstate and it just died on me, lost all power. When I got it home i checked the coil and it was working fine, the cap however had no spark so I changed the cap rotor and ignition pickup. That did not help. The fuel pump comes on and it has fuel in it. when it died on the road the check engine light did not come on. there are no errors when i put it on the computer. Any other ideas?

Answer
Hi Paul,
As explained in my 'profile' I don't have truck manuals before '04 so I am left to conjecture about this situation. My first thought is that you would want to verify that indeed the 12v on the distributor primary coil is present when you are cranking it over. That voltage source comes from the ASD relay and it will only be present if the rotational sensor(s) are putting out signals and the fuse that provided power that the ASD put out are all present. I wish I had the wiring diagrams to tell you specifics. But basically you should get spark if you power to the distributor coil when cranking. That same power goes to the fuel pump when you are cranking it over. Let me know what you find. Is there also a crank sensor on that engine or just the distributor sensor?
Please 'rate' my answer (see below).
Thanks,
Roland
