Ford Repair: Heads, valve seat, gasket

Question
I was offered a 98 Ranger by a family member for free and the only issue is that it has low compression in cylinder #6 and I did some looking and since it is only in the one cylinder the most likely cause is either a sticking valve or the valve seat got pushed back up into the head, so I was wondering if I pulled the head and ended up needing to replace it instead of being able to have it fixed would it cause problems if I put it back on without replacing the gasket. I need to know becuase I will need the vehicle soon for a job that is about 20 miles away.

Answer
yes, you must replace the gasket as it has already been compressed. and you are correct. certain years including your, this problem was common and the concern is that the valve seat got pushed back to far in the head. a reputable machine shop should be able to install a new valve seat and save the head
