Ford Repair: starting issue, air control valve, o2 sensor

Question
2000 Mercury Mountaineer, 71k miles..On occasion over the last 3/4 months but consistently over the last 3 days when I attempt to start my SUV, it turn over, runs up to about 1K RPM's then shuts off. In some cases I can restart and it starts right up, in others it may take 8-10 tries and cosistent reving of the engine before it runs. Once it finanlly starts,it runs/idles/etc fine. Battery, starter, alterator and O2 sensor have all checked out fine. Appears mostly as a cold start issue. Any idea here and thanks so much.

Answer
Hello Stuart, There is a sensor called Idle Air Control Valve, Controls engine at idle only, sounds like it is possibley sticking closed. That is where I would start 1st. Hope this helps Thanks Tony
