Ford Repair: 94 ford tarus, compression stroke, head gaskets

Question
I recently had put new head gaskets and had heads plained.Got it all put back together.Had someone doing it for me and didn't finish it.I put it back together myself.he took the distributor out and all the plug wires off.I got the firing order from autozone and put all the wires were they go.Car won't run.Messed around and finally got it to start, but it just pops through the intake and runs very ruff.Got any suggestions to help me out.

Answer
Hello Josh,
When the engine is popping through the intake, that means the ignition timing is most likely way off. To properly drop the distributor in takes some trial and error if you've never done it. To verify the distributor is in properly, you must bring the #1 cylinder up on the compression stroke with the 0 degree TDC mark lined up on the crankshaft. The rotor of the distributor should end up pointing just before the terminal on the cap marked 1. If you clean the base of the body of the distributor and the timing cover, you will likely see a factory chisel mark made showing where the body was originally located after factory timing. That should give you an idea where the cap should end up approximately.
The distributor rotates counterclockwise, and the firing order is 142536, with #1 being the one at the front of the engine at the firewall(the hardest one to get to). Because the crankshaft rotates twice for every distributor rotation, sometimes it is easy to have the crankshaft mark lined up, but not be on the compression stroke. This will put the distributor exactly opposite of where it should be by 180 degrees.
If you are still having trouble, please feel free to follow up. I hope this info helps. I'm sorry I took so long, I had a bad weekend to say the least. Good luck!
