Ford Repair: 91 probe only starts/runs with starting fluid, blown head gasket, irratic

my son has a 91 Probe turbo 2.2. it had a blown head gasket, all repairs were done, car ran idling for 10 minutes, drove around block, ran fine, idle was a little irratic but no big deal, he drove 2 blocks down the street, it died. it will now only start with starting fluid, once it is running you have to keep it idled to 2 grand to run, it has fuel pressure, no codes, timing is fine. husband is usually pretty good at diagnosing but, this time he is stumped...HELP. Probes have stumped a lot of good techs, too. I am not sure what the problem could be without codes. These cars had a lot of distributor problems, and that is where the signal is generated to fire the injectors. Does it have a MAF sensor? I think that could also cause this type of problem. There weren't a lot of these produced so not a lot of techs are good with them.
