Ford Repair: voltage regulator on 74 bronco/302/c4/auto, alternator brushes, internal regulator

Question
hello,
voltmeter  on dash dropped to 8(usally runs between 14-16) after swapout of plugs, didn't unplug posi cable on battery prior.  Did I fry points in alt. or damage external reg?(and its pretty ancient)  If v. reg is damaged, should I reroute thru alt assuming it has internal regulator. In other words, why is there still an external reg. hooked up in a vehicle whith  what i'm assuming is an alternator with an internal reg?. Right now, ex. reg has lead to coil and alternator. Reg. also no longer has female adapter that slides over the 4 male connectors. Wires are attached via crimped slide ons. The whole set up is rigged but ran great until plug swap. Any ideas?, electrical can be intimidating.  Thanks

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
There are no points in an alternator.......brushes, yes...no points. As far as having two regulators, you don't. You either have an internal or external regulator. What I would do is replace the EXTERNAL regulator and go from there. You most likely left the key on and fried it.
Hope this helps,
Erik
